Despite the booming sportswear market in China, where participation in sports is at a high and the market has grown 51% over five years, Nike's performance has deteriorated. The company has experienced eight consecutive quarters of declining sales, leading to a 30% reduction in overall business since 2021, with revenue hitting an eight-year low.
Analysts suggest that while recovery may occur once Nike stabilizes its North American operations, the challenges in China are more profound. Young consumers are increasingly opting for local brands like Anta and Li-Ning, driven by a nationalistic 'China Chic' movement that promotes domestic products.
Nike's distribution model has also been criticized for being overly complex and reliant on discounts. The company's outgoing finance chief indicated uncertainty about when growth would resume, while new leadership aims to better align products with local consumer preferences.
The shift in consumer sentiment, combined with the rise of domestic competitors and changing values among shoppers, poses significant challenges for Nike's future in China
