Carnival, Royal Caribbean, and Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings Employ Different Strategies to Manage Rising Fuel Costs

Carnival, Royal Caribbean, and Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings have all posted robust earnings for their latest quarters, even as fuel prices have surged due to the ongoing U.S.-Israel conflict, with Brent crude oil reaching $116.72 per barrel.

Carnival's CEO Josh Weinstein emphasized a strategy focused on reducing fuel consumption, claiming a 26% decrease in unit fuel consumption since 2019, which has saved the company an estimated $700 million by 2026. In contrast, Royal Caribbean and Norwegian utilize hedging strategies to mitigate fuel price volatility.

Royal Caribbean reported a fuel expenditure of $347 million, or 6.2% of revenue, while Norwegian spent $196 million, or 6.6% of revenue, in their respective third quarters. Both companies noted that high fuel costs have not dampened consumer demand for cruises, with Royal Caribbean seeing strong bookings and a notable increase in reservations for 2027.

As fuel prices are expected to remain high, the effectiveness of each company's strategy could significantly impact their financial performance and stock valuations moving forward
