Bond Market Anxiety Grows as AI Capital Expenditure Budgets Rise Among Major Tech Firms

The bond market is reflecting growing investor anxiety over the escalating capital expenditures (capex) associated with artificial intelligence (AI) initiatives. Major tech firms, including Google, Amazon, and Meta, are experiencing wider credit spreads as fixed-income investors demand higher yields to compensate for perceived risks.

This week, yields rose following Alphabet's announcement of an increased capex forecast, raising concerns that other tech giants may follow suit. The rising costs of energy, a significant expense for companies constructing large data centers, are contributing to these increased budgets.

GE Vernova CEO Scott Strazik noted that the current inflationary environment is likely to persist, influenced by geopolitical factors, with oil prices recently surpassing $100 a barrel. Analysts at Mizuho highlighted that these capex increases are testing investor limits, as hyperscalers are projected to spend more on capital expenditures than they will generate in free cash flow by next year.

This situation has sparked intense discussions among bond and equity investors regarding the financial health of these tech giants. Oracle's credit default swap (CDS) has reached multi-year highs, indicating heightened concerns about AI-related debt. Barclays credit analyst Andrew Keches pointed out that Oracle's CDS is being viewed as a hedge against AI capex and broader data center spending.

Despite a recent downgrade of Oracle's credit rating to BBB-, executives remain optimistic about their competitive position in the AI sector, bolstered by partnerships with OpenAI and other hyperscalers.

However, rising tech bond yields may complicate future financing efforts, as seen with Meta's upcoming $12 billion Texas data center financing, which is expected to carry higher borrowing costs than previous projects, signaling investor skepticism about returns on investment
