Tech Giants Rely on Legacy Businesses Amid Trillion-Dollar AI Investments

The tech giants, including Meta, Alphabet, Amazon, and Microsoft, are currently experiencing financial strain as they invest heavily in AI infrastructure while relying on their traditional revenue streams.

Meta reported a negative free cash flow of $2.12 billion, Amazon's outflows reached $42.4 billion, and Alphabet's was $9.07 billion, with Microsoft being the only major player to maintain positive cash flow at $18.63 billion, despite a 27% decline. The rising interest rates are increasing borrowing costs, which adds pressure on companies that are heavily investing in AI.

Amazon's growth in online sales has slowed to 2% year-over-year, significantly below expectations, and its capital expenditures are projected to reach $220 billion this year, potentially exceeding $280 billion next year. Meanwhile, Meta's investments in AI are not yet yielding significant revenue, leading to a 7% drop in its stock despite beating revenue expectations.

Alphabet's core search business is also facing challenges, with slowing growth and missed projections, raising concerns about the sustainability of its revenue amid increasing competition from AI technologies.

Analysts express mixed views, with some highlighting the strong balance sheets of these companies as a buffer against current cash flow issues, while others warn about the risks of future AI spending outpacing cash generation from legacy businesses
