Tony Fernandes, co-founder of AirAsia, has publicly dismissed concerns regarding the airline's financial stability, stating that the company is sustainable and does not require government assistance. This comes in light of reports suggesting that the Malaysian government is considering alternatives to AirAsia's domestic market share due to worries about its financial health.

Fernandes emphasized that AirAsia has adapted its cost and revenue structures to manage the impact of soaring fuel prices, which have increased by 58% year-over-year, reaching an average of $183 per barrel.

He clarified that the airline's recent fundraising efforts, aimed at $1 billion in international debt markets and 700 million ringgit ($171.5 million) in local credit facilities, are focused on debt restructuring rather than addressing operational shortfalls.

Fernandes also highlighted the unique aspects of AirAsia's operations, including its fleet of approximately 100 aircraft in Malaysia, making it difficult for competitors to replace its services. Looking ahead, he mentioned plans for growth, including leveraging artificial intelligence for operational efficiencies and potential partnerships with European low-cost airlines.

AirAsia has also made strategic adjustments by cutting capacity and suspending underperforming routes, with intentions to restore capacity as travel demand increases towards the end of the year
