Anthropic Reports $17 Billion in Q3 Revenue Amidst $895.4 Billion in Purchase Commitments

Anthropic, an artificial intelligence company, has provided updated financial information in an amended Form S-1 filing with the SEC, showing a remarkable revenue increase to $33.24 billion for the nine months ending September 30, a 1,200% rise year-over-year.

However, the company reported a net loss of $104 billion during this period, primarily attributed to changes in the fair value of convertible notes and derivative liabilities. In the third quarter alone, Anthropic generated approximately $17 billion in revenue but faced a net loss of $23.29 billion.

As it prepares for a potential IPO, the company is contending with market concerns regarding rising interest rates, which could impact the affordability of debt for data center developers. This anxiety is compounded by recent quarterly reports from major players like Microsoft, Google, and Amazon, indicating that their aggressive AI investments are straining cash flows.

Anthropic relies heavily on these hyperscalers for its computing capacity, alongside neoclouds, as it seeks rapid expansion. The amended S-1 also disclosed that Anthropic has committed to approximately $895.4 billion in purchase commitments and lease agreements, mainly for compute and infrastructure, with expenses in this area rising by 329% year-over-year.

CEO Dario Amodei, who co-founded Anthropic after leaving OpenAI, has emphasized the company's focus on safety, as reflected in the extensive risk factors outlined in the S-1 filing
