The annual e-Conomy SEA report from Google, Temasek, and Bain & Company reveals that generative AI adoption in Southeast Asia has surged, outpacing mobile internet uptake by four times. Despite this rapid adoption, only 1% to 2% of the population pays for personal AI subscriptions, indicating a significant disconnect between usage and direct consumer spending.
Florian Hoppe from Bain & Company noted that businesses are leveraging AI to enhance e-commerce conversion rates and streamline customer service, allowing employees to focus on higher-value tasks. Consumers may indirectly contribute to AI monetization through purchases of AI-enhanced products.
The region's digital economy is projected to grow 17% to $368 billion this year, with expectations to exceed $1 trillion by 2035. Southeast Asian consumers exhibit a 'pragmatic optimism' towards AI, with 75% willing to allow AI agents to make purchases on their behalf.
While AI usage in Southeast Asia is still only 10% of U.S. levels, businesses are beginning to see tangible benefits, such as Shopee's use of AI chatbots to manage 80% of customer inquiries, reducing costs significantly.
The report also highlights growth in various sectors, including a 10% increase in the online travel market and a 22% rise in online media revenue, driven by AI's capabilities in enhancing advertising effectiveness and customer engagement
