FTC Files Lawsuit Against Amazon for Allegedly Misleading Advertisers

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has initiated legal action against Amazon, alleging that the company has systematically overcharged advertisers by manipulating its pricing and auction systems. This lawsuit, supported by 22 state attorneys general, claims that Amazon may have generated over $20 billion from advertisers through 'hidden surcharges' since it altered its auction rules in 2019.

FTC Chairman Andrew Ferguson stated that millions of advertising customers were misled into paying inflated prices, which he argues were ultimately passed on to consumers. In response, Amazon described the lawsuit as 'misguided' and contended that it does not provide evidence of increased consumer prices.

The complaint focuses on Amazon's various advertising formats, including sponsored products and display ads, which are integral to its advertising business that generated over $68 billion in revenue last year.

As Amazon ranks as the third-largest digital advertising platform globally, trailing only Google and Meta, the outcome of this lawsuit could significantly affect its advertising revenue and overall market dynamics
