In an interview with CNBC, Gautam Kumra, the Asia chairman at McKinsey & Co., discussed the distinguishing characteristics of effective leaders, particularly owner-CEOs in Asia. He noted that these leaders excel in balancing long-term and short-term thinking and possess the ability to extract exceptional performance from ordinary employees.

Kumra's insights are based on interviews with around 30 prominent owner-CEOs, including Mukesh Ambani and Falguni Nayar, who have collectively driven substantial value creation in the region. He pointed out that owner-CEOs outperform professional CEOs and state-owned enterprises in terms of shareholder returns and return on invested capital.

Kumra shared an example from Anand Mahindra, who appointed an executive assistant to lead the South African business based on character rather than credentials, illustrating the risk-taking approach of successful leaders.

However, Kumra also highlighted challenges in transitioning leadership from founders to professional managers, noting that companies often struggle in the five years following such transitions due to the founders' difficulty in delegating and potential disconnect from market realities.

This commentary provides valuable insights for investors regarding the impact of leadership styles on company performance in Asia
