Tesla has officially launched its first factory dedicated to the mass production of the Semi, a heavy-duty electric truck, in Sparks, Nevada. This move is part of CEO Elon Musk's strategy to penetrate the commercial trucking market, which has seen limited competition from electric vehicles until now.

The Semi was first introduced in 2017, with initial sales beginning in 2022 to clients like PepsiCo. The factory opening is timely, as Tesla faces heightened competition in the electric vehicle sector and rising diesel prices, which could incentivize a shift towards electric trucks.

Recently, industry coalition ZET SCALE selected Tesla as its primary manufacturer for an initial order of 2,500 trucks, with plans to order over 10,000 in total. Additionally, trucking company Einride has ordered 500 Tesla Semi trucks, with deployments expected soon.

During Tesla's last earnings call, Musk indicated that the Semi would soon feature automated driving capabilities, which he believes are essential due to the ongoing shortage of truck drivers. He projected that self-driving technology could be operational for the Semi by late 2023 or early 2024, although he has a history of missing deadlines in this area.

Currently, the Semi's competitive advantages include its battery range, with a long-range version capable of traveling 500 miles on a full charge.

The International Council on Clean Transportation highlights the environmental benefits of transitioning to electric commercial vehicles, noting that trucks and buses, while representing less than 10% of road vehicles, contribute nearly half of transport-related air pollution.

Tesla also plans to expand the Semi's availability to Europe, where established competitors like Volvo and Daimler Truck are already active in the electric truck market
