Photonics and Optics Stocks Outperform Market, Driven by AI Demand

In 2026, stocks in the photonics and optics sector have surged, collectively gaining 113%, far exceeding the MSCI All Country World Index's 14% increase. Bank of America identifies this group as the best-performing global investment theme, benefiting from what they term 'triple momentum'—a combination of earnings, price, and news momentum.

The Tema Photonics & Optical ETF (LAZR), launched in June, has seen a 34% rise this month, largely due to strong performances from industry leaders like Coherent and Lumentum. Analysts, including Simon Leopold from Raymond James, emphasize that optics technology is crucial for the AI infrastructure, particularly in data centers that require efficient data transmission over long distances.

Traditional copper cables are inadequate for this purpose, as they cannot handle the energy demands without overheating. Companies like Coherent and Lumentum are positioned well, having secured significant investments from Nvidia, which plans to invest $2 billion in each to enhance their research and supply chains.

Despite their high valuations—Coherent at 35 times forward earnings and Lumentum at 42 times—these firms are seen as key players in the AI supply chain. Other companies like Applied Optoelectronics, which has gained 344% this year, offer additional investment avenues, particularly for those seeking U.S.-based manufacturing options.

Overall, the photonics sector is poised for continued growth as AI technologies expand, although investors are advised to be cautious of market fluctuations and high valuations
