Dr. Anna Greka, a Harvard professor and physician at Mass General Brigham, is leading efforts to connect various rare diseases through her Ladders to Cures Accelerator. This initiative focuses on 'nodal biology,' which identifies shared biological mechanisms among different rare diseases.
By developing single drugs that can treat multiple conditions, the initiative seeks to expand the patient population for these drugs, enhancing their profitability and creating a more sustainable model for rare drug development.
Greka's previous research has already demonstrated the effectiveness of this approach, as seen in a 2019 study linking a rare kidney disease to conditions affecting the eye and brain. The upcoming 3rd Annual Ladders to Cures Symposium at the Broad Institute will further highlight these efforts and their potential impact on the rare disease community.
