China Expands Overseas Mining Investments to Secure Critical Mineral Supplies

China is intensifying its efforts to dominate the global supply of critical minerals by mobilizing state-owned enterprises to acquire larger stakes in overseas mines. This initiative, described as a state-coordinated global mining strategy, aims to enhance Beijing's leverage over essential resources like lithium, nickel, and cobalt, which are crucial for electric vehicles and other technologies.

Analysts, including Dan Wang from Eurasia, note that this approach could streamline investments and reduce competition among Chinese firms, although it may also introduce risks related to corruption and investment returns due to longer approval processes.

In 2023, Chinese investments in overseas mining reached $8.8 billion, the highest since 2018, reflecting a growing urgency as nations recognize the geopolitical significance of these minerals. The Chinese government is particularly focused on reducing its reliance on imports, treating a 70% dependence on foreign minerals as a national security concern.

However, this push faces challenges as host countries increasingly demand local processing of minerals, a sector where China currently holds a dominant position. The U.S. and other nations are also affected, as they rely on China for refining rare earth elements, which has led to significant price increases for these materials outside of China.

Overall, China's strategy could reshape the competitive landscape for critical minerals, impacting both global supply chains and pricing dynamics
