Costco (COST) Approaches May Record High Amid Strong Sales Growth and Market Rotation

Costco's stock has shown resilience, gaining nearly 2% recently and climbing over 19% since mid-September, as it approaches its May record high of $1,094. This recovery is attributed to a broader market trend favoring defensive stocks, particularly as investors move away from riskier assets like AI-related stocks.

The company's fundamentals are also strong, with October net sales reaching $24.5 billion, a 12.6% year-over-year increase, and comparable sales up 11.1%. Goldman Sachs analysts noted that excluding gas sales and currency effects, comparable sales rose 7.3%, surpassing expectations.

CEO Ron Vachris highlighted the success of Costco's gasoline business, which has attracted more customers to stores, saving members over $3.2 billion compared to average market prices.

Despite its high valuation at nearly 47 times fiscal 2027 earnings estimates, the company has maintained investor interest, particularly due to improvements in membership renewal rates following concerns about declines. Jim Cramer emphasized the importance of Costco's business model and customer loyalty, which have historically justified its premium valuation.

However, he cautioned that the high price-to-earnings ratio leaves little room for operational missteps, making the company's performance critical to sustaining its market position
