Joachim Klement, a strategist at Panmure Liberum, highlighted that the evolving nature of warfare and geopolitical tensions are reshaping the defense sector.

He emphasized that while European defense stocks have benefited from increased military spending, investors are becoming more discerning, evaluating whether funds are directed towards traditional platforms or innovative technologies like AI and drones.

Klement pointed out that the cancellation of Germany's F126 program illustrates the vulnerability of legacy defense projects in a rapidly changing military landscape. He noted that companies such as Italy's Leonardo and the U.K.'s BAE Systems are adapting by developing AI-enhanced and drone-based systems.

McKinsey's Hugues Lavandier added that European defense spending is diversifying across various platforms, including conventional and advanced technologies. Klement suggested that recent stock weaknesses may be due to a shift in investor focus towards AI rather than a decline in defense fundamentals, as countries like Germany and Poland continue to increase their defense budgets
