American Airlines has launched its first retrofitted Boeing 777-300ER, designed for its most popular long-haul international routes, including London, Tokyo, and Sydney.
This aircraft now features 144 premium seats, including 70 lie-flat seats with sliding doors in the Flagship Suite section, which can generate nearly $10,000 in revenue on certain routes, compared to much lower fares for standard seats.
The airline is phasing out international first class in favor of a larger premium cabin, a strategy aimed at catching up with competitors Delta Air Lines and United Airlines, who have already established a strong presence in the premium travel market. American plans to retrofit its entire fleet of 20 Boeing 777-300ERs by next year and will also implement a similar layout on its Airbus A321XLRs.
Additionally, the airline is expanding its loyalty program, improving its on-time performance, and has announced the addition of seven international routes to its 2027 schedule, although these routes will not utilize the newly retrofitted aircraft
