Rising American Wealth Fuels Yacht Industry Growth Ahead of Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show

As the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show approaches, industry executives are optimistic about the American market's role in sustaining yacht sales, particularly as European and Middle Eastern demand wanes.

Kevin Merrigan, chairman of Northrop & Johnson, noted a significant uptick in American purchases, especially for larger yachts, despite an overall decline in global sales of pre-owned yachts over 78 feet, which fell by about 1% in volume and 5% in value year-over-year. New yacht orders also decreased slightly, from 266 to 216 for yachts over 78 feet.

The market is increasingly characterized by a concentration of wealth, with centimillionaires and billionaires driving demand for larger yachts, particularly those over 200 feet. The backlog for new mega-yachts is substantial, with delivery times extending to 2031 or later, creating a premium for almost-new yachts.

The yacht charter sector, while experiencing a dip post-pandemic, is seeing a resurgence, particularly among younger American tech entrepreneurs. The upcoming boat show will serve as a crucial indicator of market health, following strong sales at the Monaco Yacht Show, where Fraser Yachts secured contracts for yachts on display.

This suggests a positive outlook for the high-end segment of the yachting industry
