On Thursday, Zoox was granted a temporary exemption from certain National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) regulations, allowing it to deploy up to 2,500 vehicles annually for two years. This exemption is crucial as it enables Zoox to start charging for its robotaxi services, with plans to launch paid rides in Las Vegas next month.
CEO Aicha Evans emphasized the importance of this milestone for both Zoox and the autonomous vehicle industry. Previously, Zoox had received an exemption to demonstrate its vehicles on public roads but lacked the clearance to charge fares. The company has been expanding its testing locations and has offered free rides in select areas.
Unlike competitors like Waymo, which uses retrofitted vehicles, Zoox's unique design lacks traditional driver controls, subjecting it to different safety standards. The NHTSA has also highlighted concerns regarding driverless vehicles interfering with emergency responders, prompting Zoox to recall 105 robotaxis to address a software issue.
