AI’s Impact on Job Losses: Study Reveals Vulnerable Occupations and Workforce Trends

The Digital Planet initiative at Tufts University has released a study highlighting the evolving impact of AI on the job market, particularly over the next three to five years.

The study ranks 784 U.S. occupations based on their vulnerability to AI, revealing that jobs in high-tech sectors, including writers, computer programmers, and web designers, face significant risks, with 57% of writers and authors and 55% of programmers identified as particularly vulnerable.

Professor Bhaskar Chakravorti from Tufts emphasizes a paradox where the more AI assists in job performance, the more workers in those roles may become expendable.

The study also notes that while younger workers aged 22 to 25 in AI-exposed roles have seen a 16% decline in employment, older workers have remained stable, suggesting that AI may replace the formal knowledge younger employees bring while complementing the experience of older workers.

Erik Brynjolfsson from the Stanford Digital Economy Lab supports this view, indicating that AI's impact is more about reshaping tasks rather than eliminating entire job categories. The research suggests that while some jobs may be at risk, others may see increased productivity due to AI assistance.

For instance, healthcare professionals may experience augmentation rather than displacement, allowing them to serve more patients efficiently. Overall, the studies indicate that while AI will reduce demand for certain roles, it will also enhance productivity in others, highlighting the importance of strategic choices by companies and policymakers in navigating this transition
