Yields on U.S. Treasuries have surged, with the 10-year Treasury yield reaching a high of 5.29% and the 30-year bond yield at its highest since 2002. Despite the pressure on stocks, this environment presents an opportunity for investors to enhance their income through a T-bill ladder strategy, as noted by Vince DeCrow, founder of Rise Investments.
This strategy involves purchasing Treasury bills with varying maturities, allowing investors to reinvest as bills mature, thus creating a consistent cash flow. Currently, the three-month T-bill yields around 4.2%, while the 12-month T-bill exceeds 4.5%. This method is particularly advantageous for those with specific financial goals, such as saving for a home down payment.
Additionally, as the Federal Reserve continues to raise rates, T-bill ladders help mitigate interest rate risk by allowing investors to hold to maturity and reinvest. Cooper Howard from Schwab Center for Financial Research emphasizes that this strategy provides certainty regarding returns, assuming maturity is held.
Investors can also consider combining T-bills with notes for a diversified approach, but should be cautious of interest rate risk for longer durations. Furthermore, Treasury bills offer tax advantages, being exempt from state and local taxes, which is beneficial for investors in high-tax states.
Other options like Treasury-inflation protected securities (TIPS) and municipal bonds can also complement this strategy, providing additional income and tax benefits. However, investors must be diligent in selecting the right issues and managing their portfolios actively to maximize returns while minimizing risks
