FTC and 20 States File Lawsuit Against Dollar General (DG) for Alleged Overcharging of Customers

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) announced a lawsuit against Dollar General, claiming the retailer has charged customers more than the prices displayed in stores and advertisements. Following the announcement, Dollar General's shares fell approximately 4%.

The lawsuit alleges that the company has exploited vulnerable shoppers, resulting in millions of dollars in unlawful overcharges and that it has received numerous consumer complaints without taking adequate measures to resolve the issue. The states involved in the lawsuit include Alabama, Arizona, California, and others, reflecting a broad coalition aimed at consumer protection.

Christopher Mufarrige, director of the FTC's Bureau of Consumer Protection, stated that Dollar General has betrayed consumer trust and caused financial harm to communities already struggling with high costs.

This lawsuit comes at a time when consumers are particularly sensitive to pricing due to elevated food and gas prices, and it may influence public perception of Dollar General as well as its financial performance in the near term
