Inflation Concerns Persist as Investors Explore TIPS and Commodities for Protection

The upcoming Consumer Price Index (CPI) report is expected to show inflation at 3.6% for September, influenced by rising energy costs linked to geopolitical tensions. Although inflation has decreased from its peak of 9.1% in 2022, it remains above the Federal Reserve's target of 2%.

Investors are increasingly concerned about inflation, as reflected in the New York Fed's Survey of Consumer Expectations, which shows a one-year inflation outlook rising to 3.9%. TIPS, which are designed to protect against inflation, have struggled this year, with the iShares TIPS Bond ETF reporting a total return of -1.16% year-to-date due to rising interest rates.

The 10-year TIPS yield has reached 2.87%, the highest since November 2008, making them more attractive despite their recent poor performance. Analysts suggest that TIPS' challenges stem from rising real yields rather than inflation expectations. To mitigate risks, investors might consider individual TIPS or a TIPS bond ladder.

Additionally, experts recommend diversifying portfolios with commodities, infrastructure, and alternative assets to hedge against inflation. Funds like the State Street Multi-Asset Real Return ETF and the PIMCO Inflation Response Multi-Asset Fund offer broad inflation protection.

Infrastructure investments, which often include inflation-adjusted revenue contracts, are also highlighted as a viable option. Overall, while inflation risks persist, strategic asset allocation can help investors navigate this challenging environment
