Meta’s Ad Business Surges 26% Amid AI Advancements, While Google’s Search Revenue Grows 12%

In the third quarter, Meta's ad revenue surged by 26% year-over-year to $63.1 billion, while Google's search division grew by only 12% to $63.4 billion. This marks the largest growth gap in Meta's favor since 2021, indicating a shift in market dynamics as AI technologies like ChatGPT and Claude begin to change how consumers search for information online.

Analysts, including Nate Elliott from Emarketer, express concern that if AI tools provide better search experiences, it could fundamentally alter user habits, potentially harming Google's ad revenue. Following disappointing earnings, Alphabet's stock fell over 12%, erasing approximately $500 billion in market capitalization, while Meta's stock also faced challenges, dropping 14% in October.

Both companies are investing heavily in AI infrastructure, with Google projecting up to $205 billion in capital expenditures and Meta up to $145 billion. Despite Google's efforts to diversify its revenue streams, ads still account for less than two-thirds of its revenue, while Meta relies on ads for 98%.

Analysts suggest that Google's ability to monetize search effectively in this evolving AI landscape will be crucial for its stock performance moving forward
