Moody’s Warns That Unprecedented AI Spending Could Threaten Credit Quality of Amazon, Meta, Alphabet, and Others

Moody's recent research highlights a significant shift in the financial landscape for hyperscalers like Microsoft, Amazon, Alphabet, Meta, Oracle, and CoreWeave, as they transition from asset-light to asset-heavy business models due to the demands of AI infrastructure.

This transition is projected to drive capital expenditures to $785 billion by 2026, with total spending potentially reaching $1 trillion next year. The report indicates that these companies are accumulating approximately $460 billion in direct debt while also committing to $1.2 trillion in lease obligations for data centers, which Moody's considers debt-equivalent liabilities.

Although Microsoft, Alphabet, Amazon, and Meta maintain strong balance sheets, the immediate financial pressure is felt more acutely by lower-rated firms like Oracle and CoreWeave. The interconnected nature of investments in AI labs and cloud services creates a circular ecosystem that raises risks, as many companies depend on the same AI customers and market assumptions.

Despite these challenges, the demand for AI computing remains strong, and long-term contracts provide some revenue predictability, suggesting that while the financial profile of the tech industry is changing, it still possesses significant strengths. Investors should be aware of the evolving financial dynamics and the importance of returns on investment in this new landscape
