Goldman Sachs has analyzed how companies can leverage artificial intelligence to enhance productivity, focusing on the relationship between labor costs and AI exposure.
Their research indicates that while the AI boom has been ongoing since the launch of ChatGPT in November 2022, the real financial benefits have yet to be realized at the enterprise level, as most investments are still directed towards building infrastructure.
The firm has compiled a list of companies within the Russell 1000 that are likely to benefit from future productivity increases, including CoStar Group, Dollar Tree, and eBay, particularly in sectors like software, finance, and biotech.
Goldman’s chief U.S. equity strategist, Ben Snider, noted that the recent uptick in enterprise AI spending suggests that the impact on earnings will become clearer in the near future. Despite a cautious investor sentiment towards AI implementation, some companies, like Doximity, have already reported surprising productivity gains.
Goldman Sachs economists predict that AI could boost productivity growth by 1.5 percentage points over the next decade, while other estimates vary, with McKinsey suggesting gains could reach 3.4 percentage points by 2040. However, concerns about potential monopolization of AI tools could hinder broader adoption among smaller firms, as highlighted by MIT economist Daron Acemoglu
