Ford Motor has unveiled its new midsize electric truck, the Fathom, which will start at $28,350, with destination and delivery charges bringing the total to $29,945. This pricing strategy aims to position Ford competitively in the electric vehicle (EV) truck market, which has been characterized by high prices.
Preorders for the Fathom are set to begin in early 2027, with customer deliveries expected later that year. The Fathom will be the first vehicle built on Ford's new Universal Electric Vehicle (UEV) platform, which is crucial for the company's goal of achieving breakeven for its Model e business unit by 2029.
A Ford spokesperson expressed confidence in the UEV platform, stating it will provide a strategic advantage and enable profitability within a year of launch, while also being cost-competitive with leading global EV manufacturers like Tesla and those from China.
Despite a slowdown in EV adoption and the removal of U.S. consumer incentives for EV purchases, Ford is committed to making its electric vehicles comparable in price to traditional gas-powered vehicles through innovative technologies and efficiencies.
