Wall Street's focus on Big Tech's spending on artificial intelligence infrastructure has raised concerns about declining free cash flow, a key metric for assessing business health. In the June quarter, both Amazon and Alphabet reported negative free cash flow, with declines of 210% and 770% year over year, respectively. Meta's free cash flow contracted by 91%, while Microsoft's decline was 23%.
This trend is attributed to increased capital expenditures for AI infrastructure, leading companies to tap debt and equity markets to sustain spending. While free cash flow is crucial for understanding a company's financial flexibility, it is important to also consider operating cash flow, which remains strong across these companies.
For instance, Alphabet's operating cash flow surged about 40% year over year, and Amazon's increased similarly. This suggests that despite the short-term pressures on free cash flow, the underlying businesses are healthy and capable of generating cash.
Investors are encouraged to look beyond free cash flow to assess the long-term potential of these companies as they invest heavily in AI infrastructure, which could yield significant returns in the future
