The Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) has imposed a $35,000 penalty on George Santos, a former Republican congressman, after determining he engaged in trading based on information about his attendance at the State of the Union. The CFTC's findings revealed that Santos traded on Kalshi event contracts in February, specifically one that questioned whether he would attend the address.
Following his social media posts indicating he would be present, the prices of these contracts shifted favorably for Santos, allowing him to profit over $17,500. In addition to the monetary penalty, Santos is banned from trading for three years and must forfeit his trading profits.
Santos's lawyer, Joseph Murray, stated that Santos has agreed to resolve the inquiry without admitting to any of the CFTC's allegations.
This incident underscores the potential risks and regulatory challenges associated with trading on political events, particularly as Santos has a history of legal issues, including a previous sentence for wire fraud and identity theft, which was commuted by former President Trump
