Todd Gordon Analyzes Meta Platforms (META) Amid Market Shift from Growth to Value

In a recent analysis, Todd Gordon highlights a troubling trend for Meta Platforms (META) as it experiences a significant shift in investor sentiment amid a broader market rotation from growth to value stocks. Despite reporting record revenue of $64.6 billion for the quarter, a 26% increase, the company's capital expenditures have surged, consuming more than half of its revenue.

Meta's projected capex for 2026 is expected to reach between $135 billion and $145 billion, a stark increase from $70 billion in 2025. This excessive spending has resulted in negative free cash flow for the first time in over a decade, prompting concerns about the return on investment from its ambitious AI initiatives.

Following its earnings report, Meta announced a $37.5 billion stock offering to fund its ongoing expenditures. The situation mirrors challenges faced by Alphabet, which also reported increased spending and negative free cash flow.

Gordon notes that while he has recently added to his position in Meta due to positive reception of its new Muse AI agent, the ongoing scrutiny over spending may necessitate a reevaluation of holdings. Overall, the market's reaction reflects a cautious approach towards tech companies heavily investing in AI amidst uncertain returns
