General Motors (GM) Plans to Switch Listing to Nasdaq to Enhance Valuation and Brand Identity

General Motors is set to migrate its stock listing from the NYSE to the Nasdaq on November 17, a strategic move intended to elevate its valuation and reshape its brand image in the eyes of investors.

Following Walmart's successful transition, which leveraged technology to boost its market perception, GM hopes to replicate this success as it shifts focus from traditional combustion engines to electric and autonomous vehicles. After the announcement, GM's shares rose by 5.5% on Tuesday, marking its largest increase since January 27, and gained an additional 2.4% the following day.

Despite a recent $20 billion share repurchase plan, which represents about 30% of its market cap, GM's stock had previously dropped 7% due to concerns over rising costs and pricing pressures. Analysts, including Gordon Haskett's Don Bilson, argue that GM's current valuation is unjustifiably low given its cash generation capabilities.

GM is also emphasizing its high-margin software and service divisions, which have shown significant growth in deferred revenue. The Nasdaq listing could lead to inclusion in the Nasdaq-100 index, potentially increasing passive capital inflows and stock liquidity, which is crucial for GM's long-term strategy.

Barclays analyst Dan Levy notes that GM could be a strong candidate for this index, which historically has provided an average return boost of 1% above the market. Overall, GM's shift to the Nasdaq is a calculated effort to align itself with a tech-focused future and attract a more stable shareholder base
