The Social Security Administration is set to announce the official COLA for 2027, with estimates suggesting an increase of 3.5% to 3.6%, marking the largest adjustment in three years. This increase would raise the average monthly benefit from $1,940 to approximately $2,008.
Despite this positive adjustment, a recent AARP survey indicates that 76% of adults aged 50 and older believe this increase will not be adequate to meet their daily expenses. Rising costs, especially for Medicare, are a significant concern for beneficiaries. For instance, Medicare Part B premiums are projected to rise to $209.50 in 2027, which could offset the benefits of the COLA.
The upcoming announcement will include additional inflation data, which could slightly adjust the COLA estimate. Social Security's COLA is designed to help beneficiaries keep pace with inflation, but many feel that the adjustments have not kept up with the actual cost of living increases they face.
The situation highlights the ongoing financial challenges for retirees, particularly as healthcare costs continue to rise
