BlackRock and Baillie Gifford Lead $200 Million Series D Financing for 3D Printed Home Builder Icon

Icon, based in Austin, has announced a significant $200 million Series D financing round, co-led by Baillie Gifford and BlackRock, which brings its total funding to $700 million and establishes a valuation of $1.4 billion.

This funding comes as the company launches its Titan multi-story robotic 3D construction system, which improves upon previous technology that could only construct single-story buildings. The Titan system not only accelerates home construction by six weeks but also reduces labor needs and lowers costs by 40%.

Jason Ballard, co-founder and CEO of Icon, emphasized the importance of partnering with investors experienced in scaling physical companies, citing Baillie Gifford's track record with firms like Nvidia and Tesla.

The funding is particularly timely as the traditional homebuilding sector faces challenges from rising interest rates and a persistent housing shortage, with estimates suggesting a need for up to four million new homes. Icon plans to use the new capital to expand its Titan technology and enter new markets, including Texas, Florida, and Washington, D.C.

The company is also pivoting to sell its technology to other builders, supported by financing from Wells Fargo, which is incentivizing homebuyers. Ballard noted a surge in demand for their technology, significantly exceeding initial forecasts. Icon aims to achieve fourfold revenue growth this year and anticipates doubling that next year, with a potential IPO on the horizon.

Additionally, Icon is collaborating with the U.S. military and NASA, receiving over $370 million in contracts for Project Olympus, which focuses on developing construction systems for lunar habitation. Ballard expressed optimism about upcoming announcements from NASA regarding moon base developments
