Prediction Market Traders Anticipate Job Creation Rebound in August, But Below Economists' Estimates

Following a July payrolls report that indicated job losses, traders on prediction market platforms are predicting a recovery in hiring for August. On Kalshi, there is a 50% chance that more than 50,000 jobs were added, which is below the Dow Jones consensus estimate of 53,000 jobs. Similarly, Polymarket traders assign a 48% likelihood to the same job creation figure.

This cautious sentiment stems from recent trends where both traders and economists have overestimated job creation, notably in June and July. The upcoming employment report, scheduled for release at 8:30 a.m. ET on Friday, will provide official data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, which traders are closely monitoring.

The market also reflects uncertainty, with about a 25% chance of job losses and a similar probability for job creation exceeding 80,000. This situation highlights the volatility and unpredictability in the labor market, which could impact investor sentiment and economic forecasts
