Romania's defense minister, Radu-Dinel Miruță, reported that F-16 fighter jets successfully destroyed a marine drone detected close to the Neptun Deep gas project in the Black Sea, which is set to make Romania the largest natural gas producer in the EU upon its expected production start in 2027.

This incident underscores the ongoing risks associated with Russia's military actions in Ukraine, as the drone was confirmed not to be of Ukrainian origin. Romanian President Nicușor Dan condemned the drone's presence, attributing it to Russia and emphasizing the need for vigilance alongside NATO allies.

The Romanian Coast Guard's detection of the drone prompted a rapid military response, showcasing Romania's commitment to safeguarding its critical infrastructure and personnel.

This event follows a series of similar incidents, including airspace breaches by Russian aircraft, raising concerns about regional security and energy stability in Europe, particularly in light of the rising energy prices since the onset of the conflict in Ukraine
