According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, job openings rose to 7.52 million in September, exceeding expectations and reflecting a 333,000 increase from August. This uptick brought the job openings rate to 4.5% of the workforce, with 414,000 more openings than unemployed individuals, indicating a favorable job market.

Notably, sectors such as manufacturing, state and local government, and professional services contributed to this growth. Additionally, the number of workers quitting their jobs reached 3.36 million, the highest since March 2025, suggesting increased worker confidence in securing new employment.

Hiring also improved, with 5.4 million hires recorded, while layoffs decreased to 1.64 million, the lowest since March 2025. This report precedes the upcoming nonfarm payrolls data, which is anticipated to show a modest increase in employment. Overall, these trends suggest a resilient labor market despite ongoing economic challenges like inflation and high fuel prices
