Cyberattack on European Supermarkets Disrupts Refrigeration Systems, Spoiling Food

A series of cyberattacks targeted European supermarkets, notably affecting Ahold Delhaize, Carrefour, and Intermarché, among others. These incidents resulted in dangerously high temperatures in refrigeration units, with reports of temperatures reaching 50°C (122°F) in some cases, prompting food disposal.

Ahold Delhaize confirmed that dozens of its stores in Belgium and Luxembourg were impacted, while Carrefour and Intermarché reported similar disruptions. The attacks echo a previous wave of cyber incidents in October that caused extensive damage and raised alarms about food security.

Experts suggest that the attacks exploit vulnerabilities in refrigeration systems that are inadequately secured, with some systems remaining unpatched despite known risks. The lack of claims from any hacking group and the nature of the attacks have led to speculation about their motives, with some suggesting they may be intended to create instability in countries supporting Ukraine.

This situation highlights the urgent need for improved cybersecurity measures within the retail sector to protect against such vulnerabilities
