Kraken Launches Cashback Debit Card to Compete in Consumer Financial Products

Kraken is introducing the Krak Card, which allows users to earn up to 2% cash or bitcoin back on purchases, with the reward rate increasing based on the customer's asset holdings. This card enables spending from over 600 currencies and crypto assets, converting balances into dollars at the point of sale.

By entering the debit card market, Kraken aims to compete with fintech apps like CashApp and Venmo, as the crypto landscape shifts towards mainstream financial products. The card's rewards are funded through customer deposits rather than traditional interchange fees, which are limited by U.S. regulations.

Kraken's strategy appears focused on capturing a larger share of customers' financial activities, enhancing user retention and asset management on its platform. Co-CEO Arjun Sethi highlighted a disconnect between consumers and traditional financial products, noting that many Americans feel financially disadvantaged and are seeking better rewards without incurring debt.

The Krak Card is positioned as a response to these consumer needs, emphasizing cash rewards over points. Kraken, which has historically catered to crypto enthusiasts, is now attempting to broaden its appeal while maintaining its core identity rooted in decentralization and financial autonomy
