Analysts see Coinbase (COIN) quarterly loss as a result of crypto market weakness, not business fundamentals

Coinbase shares fell 14% as the company reported a quarterly loss attributed to ongoing weakness in the crypto market, a situation anticipated by investors.

Despite this, the earnings report highlighted several positive developments, including record market share in trading volume, a doubling of growth in prediction markets, and increased revenue from subscriptions and services, which accounted for nearly 50% of the quarter's revenue.

CFO Alesia Haas defended the company's strategy, noting that new products are still in early stages compared to established trading businesses.

Analysts have mixed views; while BTIG's Andrew Harte maintained a buy rating and acknowledged improved long-term competitiveness, Piper Sandler's Patrick Moley expressed concerns about the company's weakening position relative to competitors and lowered his price target.

Other analysts echoed the sentiment that while non-trading business execution is strong, the decline in crypto trading remains a significant concern. Overall, the market is cautious, with some analysts suggesting that without a rebound in trading activity, further cost-cutting measures may be necessary
