Analysts recommend buying Wells Fargo (WFC) as turnaround momentum builds

Wells Fargo has recently emerged from years of regulatory restrictions that limited its growth potential. The lifting of the Federal Reserve-imposed asset cap on June 3, 2025, marks a pivotal moment for the bank, allowing it to invest more freely and expand its lending operations.

In the third quarter, Wells Fargo reported an impressive 11% year-over-year growth in average loans, driven by increases in commercial lending, credit cards, and auto loans. Additionally, the bank's net interest income rose 5% to $12.5 billion, indicating improved profitability.

With a return on tangible common equity of 16.3%, there is potential for further gains as the bank aims for a target of 17% to 18%. Despite these positive developments, Wells Fargo's shares are trading approximately 15% below their 52-week high, suggesting that the stock may be undervalued at around 10.9 times earnings and 1.5 times book value.

Stephanie Link, Chief Investment Strategist at Hightower Advisors, believes that under CEO Charlie Scharf's leadership, Wells Fargo is transitioning from a defensive stance to a more aggressive growth strategy, making it an attractive investment opportunity as the bank's turnaround continues to gain momentum
