U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Closes 2022 Investigation into 695,000 Tesla (TSLA) Vehicles Over Unexpected Braking

The U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) announced the closure of its 2022 preliminary evaluation into 695,000 Tesla Model 3 and Model Y vehicles, which were under scrutiny for unexpected deceleration. The NHTSA cited a low demonstrated hazard to drivers and a notable decrease in incident reports, which fell from 300 at the start of the investigation to just three in 2026.

This decline was attributed to software updates released by Tesla in early 2022 aimed at addressing the issue. The regulator noted that the reported conditions did not affect the vehicles' lane positioning or create a significant risk of collision.

Additionally, the NHTSA recently closed another investigation concerning loss of steering control in approximately 376,241 Model 3 and Model Y vehicles. These developments are likely to bolster investor confidence in Tesla, as they suggest that the company is effectively managing safety concerns and maintaining vehicle reliability
