U.S. Imposes 50% Tariffs on Canadian Imports as Trade Negotiations Fail

The breakdown in trade talks between the U.S. and Canada culminated in the U.S. imposing significant tariffs, which a senior Trump administration official confirmed would take effect just after midnight on Saturday. Canada's Prime Minister Mark Carney responded by suspending negotiations and indicating that Canada would retaliate dollar for dollar against the new tariffs.

Carney criticized the last-minute changes in the U.S. proposals as unfair and uneconomic, raising concerns about the reliability of future agreements. Although the tariffs target a relatively small portion of Canadian exports, they compound existing tariffs on steel, lumber, and autos, which could jeopardize Canada's fragile economic recovery.

The tariffs will apply irrespective of any preferential treatment under the U.S.-Mexico-Canada trade agreement, complicating future trade relations between the two nations
