Sovereign wealth funds have reversed a previous downturn in investments in mainland China and Hong Kong, with total inflows reaching $14.2 billion in the first nine months of 2026, a dramatic increase from the $4.9 billion invested throughout 2025.

This resurgence is largely attributed to Middle Eastern investors, particularly Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund, which contributed $6 billion, followed by Abu Dhabi Investment Authority with $2.5 billion. The renewed interest comes as investors look to capitalize on opportunities in sectors such as technology, biotechnology, and consumer goods, despite lingering geopolitical tensions.

Jenny Lee from Granite Asia noted a shift in sentiment towards China, with many now questioning if they are missing out on investment opportunities. Additionally, Andrew Wang from Mubadala highlighted attractive valuations and a growing consumer market as key factors driving their investments in China.

Other funds, including Qatar Investment Authority and Singapore's Temasek, are also exploring opportunities in the region, particularly in biotechnology and AI-related sectors. However, despite this rebound, China's share of sovereign wealth fund investments remains small compared to Western markets, with the U.S. attracting $132.4 billion in the same period
