South Korean President Lee Jae Myung Urges Preparedness for 'Worst-Case Scenario' Amid Reduced U.S. Military Drills

President Lee Jae Myung of South Korea stated that while maintaining peace is crucial, the country must also prepare for potential worst-case scenarios regarding North Korea. This statement follows U.S. President Donald Trump's directive to Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth to significantly reduce joint military exercises with South Korea, which are perceived as provocative by North Korea.

The current exercises, known as Ulchi Freedom Shield, involve approximately 18,000 South Korean troops and are scheduled to continue until August 27. North Korea has condemned these drills, claiming they are preparations for invasion.

Trump's comments, which framed North Korea as 'unthreatening and respectful,' seem to be aimed at fostering dialogue with Kim Jong Un, as noted by Victor Cha from the Center for Strategic and International Studies.

Cha pointed out that Trump has previously used military exercises as leverage in negotiations, suggesting that the timing of these drills may be a strategic move to shift focus from other conflicts, such as the situation in Iran.

South Korean officials are reportedly in discussions with the U.S. regarding military contributions, considering various factors including readiness on the Korean Peninsula
