Christine Lagarde announced her resignation from her role as President of the European Central Bank (ECB), effective February 7, 2027. Lagarde has led the ECB since July 2019 and was initially set to serve until October 2027.

Her leadership has been praised for navigating the euro area through various crises, including the COVID-19 pandemic, geopolitical tensions, and economic challenges such as inflation. European Council President Antonio Costa acknowledged her contributions, highlighting her role in maintaining stability during turbulent times. The process to appoint her successor will commence immediately.

Lagarde, who has a distinguished career including being the first female Finance Minister of a G7 country and the managing director of the International Monetary Fund, is speculated to be a candidate for the chair of the World Economic Forum. She has indicated that she does not intend to run for the French presidency in the upcoming 2027 election.

This leadership transition is critical as it may impact future ECB monetary policy and the broader economic landscape in Europe
