Analysts expect downside for Alphabet (GOOGL) following disappointing earnings report

Alphabet's second quarter results showed a revenue increase of nearly 25% year-over-year to $127.6 billion, but it fell short of the $128.2 billion expected by analysts. Adjusted earnings per share (EPS) dropped 7% to $2.67, significantly below the anticipated $3.02. Operating income rose 30% to $40.6 billion, yet this also missed expectations.

The company's stock plummeted nearly 10% in after-hours trading, marking the first quarterly miss in nearly four years. Despite these setbacks, Alphabet's Google Cloud segment performed well, with revenue doubling year-over-year to $30.71 billion and operating income tripling to $11.12 billion.

The backlog for cloud services increased to $561 billion, with over half expected to be realized in the next two years. However, concerns linger regarding the Search segment, which saw revenue growth decelerate for the second consecutive quarter, raising questions about the impact of AI on traditional advertising revenue.

Alphabet's total ad revenue grew by 10.5%, but this was significantly lower than the 26% growth reported by its competitor, Meta Platforms. The company also reported negative free cash flow of $9.07 billion, influenced by high capital expenditures and a substantial cash payment related to a European Commission fine.

With a substantial amount of cash and marketable securities, Alphabet is still facing significant future obligations. Analysts are cautious about the stock, especially with ongoing capital expenditures expected to exceed $300 billion by 2027. The stock's valuation remains reasonable, but the company needs to meet or exceed investor expectations to regain its previous highs
