Over 20 Million Medicare Beneficiaries to Receive One-Time $90 Payment to Offset Part B Premiums

The announcement from the White House indicates that approximately 20.8 million Medicare Part B enrollees will receive a one-time payment of $90, with direct deposits expected to occur around October 8, 2026. This payment is relatively small compared to the projected standard Medicare Part B premium of $202.90 per month for 2026, totaling about $2,434.80 annually.

Notably, the payments will not be available to those receiving Medicaid premium assistance, individuals subject to Income-Related Monthly Adjustment Amounts (IRMAAs), or beneficiaries living outside the U.S. The funding for these payments will come from unutilized resources in the Medicare Improvement Fund, which has $2 billion allocated for enhancements to the Medicare fee-for-service program.

Additionally, the rising Medicare premiums will impact Social Security benefits, as these premiums are deducted directly from monthly payments. The Social Security Administration is expected to announce a cost-of-living adjustment for 2027, which could range from 3.5% to 3.6%, the highest increase in three years, further highlighting the financial pressures on seniors reliant on these benefits
