Mistral, a French AI startup, announced on Tuesday that it secured €3 billion in funding led by Samsung, alongside contributions from the Scaleup Europe Fund and PSG Equity. This funding round has elevated Mistral's valuation from €11.7 billion last year to over €21 billion.
CEO Arthur Mensch indicated that the capital will be used to enhance infrastructure, including the establishment of data centers and increased computing capacity, with a goal to double their owned compute resources over the next five years.
Mistral aims to differentiate itself from competitors like OpenAI and Anthropic by providing customized AI solutions tailored to individual companies, particularly in sectors such as manufacturing, where they already collaborate with ASML and plan to work with Samsung.
Mensch anticipates that Mistral's annual recurring revenue could surpass $1 billion this year, contingent on current growth trends. The company is positioning itself as a non-U.S. and non-Chinese alternative in the AI landscape, appealing to European interests in 'sovereign AI' and focusing on open-weight models.
Despite facing competition from Chinese AI labs, Mensch asserts that Mistral's upcoming models will be highly competitive, emphasizing the importance of reliability and long-term support for European enterprises.
