JetBlue Airways to Close Newark and LaGuardia Operations to Focus on Fort Lauderdale Expansion

JetBlue Airways announced plans to close its flight attendant base at Newark Liberty International Airport and tech operations bases at both Newark and LaGuardia airports as part of a cost-reduction strategy. The airline emphasized that no employees will lose their jobs, as they will have the option to transfer to other bases.

This decision coincides with JetBlue's intention to end seasonal flights between Newark and Los Angeles, as well as Las Vegas, to redirect resources towards growth at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport.

JetBlue is set to expand its Mint business class service with new daily flights from Fort Lauderdale to San Diego starting November 19, and will also increase Mint-equipped flights to San Francisco and Los Angeles this winter. The airline has been working to eliminate unprofitable routes and reduce costs, with its last profitable quarter occurring two years ago. JetBlue President Marty St.

George highlighted the high operational costs at LaGuardia, which has led to a significant reduction in the airline's presence there. The strategic focus on Fort Lauderdale is critical for JetBlue, especially following the collapse of Spirit Airlines, which previously held the top position in that market.

The airline is also exploring the establishment of a premium airport lounge in Fort Lauderdale, further indicating its commitment to enhancing service in that region
