Intel Secures Fortinet as First Named Customer for Foundry Services Under CEO Lip-Bu Tan

Intel's recent announcement that Fortinet will utilize its foundry to produce the next-generation SP6 security chip is a notable achievement for CEO Lip-Bu Tan, who has been in charge since March 2025. This partnership is particularly important as Intel aims to establish itself in the competitive foundry market, which has seen heightened demand for advanced chips, especially in cybersecurity.

The SP6 will be manufactured using Intel's older 4 process technology, which is less advanced than its leading 14A and 18A processes. Despite this, securing Fortinet as a client is a positive development for Intel, which has struggled to attract significant customers for its advanced manufacturing capabilities.

Currently, Intel's most prominent confirmed customer remains itself, with additional contracts involving the U.S. government and various tech giants like Microsoft and Amazon for lower-volume chips.

The recent investment from the U.S. government, which acquired a 10% stake in Intel, has also contributed to a substantial increase in the company's stock price, which has risen over 300% in the past year. As Fortinet continues to thrive in a growing market for cybersecurity solutions, this partnership could enhance Intel's credibility and attract further business in the foundry sector.

Intel is set to report its second-quarter results soon, which may provide additional insights into its financial health and future prospects
