Analysts Goldman Sachs and Citi assess SpaceX’s strategy to access 80,000 cell sites amid rising competition with major telecoms

SpaceX is reportedly in talks to access as many as 80,000 cell sites, which could allow the company to expand its market share in the telecommunications sector. Analysts are making a distinction between cell towers and cell sites, with the latter encompassing various structures such as rooftops and small cells, which could provide SpaceX with diverse options for network expansion.

Goldman Sachs analyst Michael Ng noted that this differentiation may reveal new opportunities for SpaceX. Citi's Michael Rollins speculated that the company might be targeting smaller cell towers as part of its strategy.

Bernstein analyst Laurent Yoon emphasized that entering large-scale tower lease agreements would indicate SpaceX's shift towards owning its infrastructure rather than relying on partners.

Following this news, tower stocks like American Tower and Crown Castle saw significant gains, while traditional telecom stocks, including AT&T and T-Mobile, experienced declines as investors reacted to the potential for increased competition.

Additionally, SpaceX's recent acquisition of low-band spectrum from Grain Management is expected to enhance its network capabilities, allowing for better indoor coverage. However, AT&T CEO John Stankey cautioned that competing with established telecoms will require substantial investment and time to achieve comparable performance levels
